Midsize Van with Full-size Capabilities

Mercedes has solved the goldilocks equation with the Mercedes Metris van which is a mid sized cargo van with as much storage and towing capacity. And that’s thanks to the peaked out Mercedes Transmission that was able to be crammed into the spacious Benz while still retaining the ability to be able to park it in a standard size garage.   Mercedes-Benz has officially entered into the growing market of mid-sized cargo vans with the garageable Metris. The Metris is a new, right-sized van offering from Mercedes-Benz that is larger than small vans and smaller than large vans. Its value proposition includes superior craftsmanship, high cargo/towing capacity and an attractive price. It is designed to thrive in large metropolitan areas with an agile yet spacious presence. Its size and garageability allow this mid-size van to fit easily in parking garages and navigate the streets in busy metropolitan areas. In addition to its sophisticated, sleek design, it carries many of the rugged characteristics of the larger Sprinter. Continue Reading Image via Motor News Media Corporation

Mercedes-Benz Considering Exit from F1 Racing

Mercedes-Benz has been a contractual member of Formula 1 racing since 2009 where Mercedes decided to join the sport not only as a racing team but as an engine supplier. But their agreement to remain in the sport wraps up this coming 2020 and team boss Toto Wolff says that Mercedes will remain in the sport as long as it continues to develop in a positive way.   Team boss Toto Wolff says Mercedes is only committed to Formula 1 until 2020. Mercedes co-owner and boss Wolff told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Mercedes decided in 2009 to compete not only as an engine supplier but also with its own team in Formula 1. We have committed ourselves until 2020, but what happens then is unclear. In my opinion, we will stay in Formula 1 if the sport develops in a positive way." Mercedes' commitment, as well as the other top teams, is in the form of bilateral contractual agreements with the Bernie Ecclestone-led commercial rights holder. Those rights are in the process of being taken over by Liberty Media. Continue Reading

Mercedes Makes A Change To Inline 6s

6-Cylinder Engine Modifications for Benz

Mercedes-Benz abandoned their inline engines back in the 90s when they made a move to consolidate their engine models with interchangeable parts for ease of production. In the 90s V6 engines were the top of the line, but with Mercedes crack engineers they claim to get over 400 horses out of new 6 inline Mercedes engines which we expect to see entering almost every non-electric model from now on. Fifteen years ago, Mercedes-Benz abandoned its inline-sixes in favor of V-6s. “Half of our engine guys were sad when we switched from the inline-six to the V-6 layout,” one of Daimler’s engineers remembers. “Now it’s the other way around.” Mercedes is pulling an about-face, returning to the straight-six configuration for the same reasons that originally had it embrace the V-6. Back then, a common parts and production strategy dictated the switch. Daimler had developed a generation of V-6 and V-8 engines with common parts. (The last remnant of that era is the loosely related 6.0-liter V-12 that sits under the hood of the 600 and AMG 65 models.) Continue Reading

Mercedes Motorsport Boss Admits To Maxed Out Performance

mercedes_logo-9

Mercedes Capped F1 Regulations

While Mercedes is doing great performance wise in this years F1 scene, it’s a far cry from the dominance exhibited last year where Mercedes was bounds and leaps ahead of the competition. Toto Wolff states that this is due to Mercedes hitting a performance cap as far as the regulations are concerned, allowing competition to catch up. Toto Wolff is also against the changes to regulations next year as he is worried it would further destroy the level playing field. While the regulations remain the same, each team has the time to optimize their engines and catch up to the performance titan that is the Mercedes engine.   Mercedes has maxed out on performance under the current Formula 1 regulations, according to its motorsport boss Toto Wolff. Mercedes won its third consecutive constructors' championship in Japan while its drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are again contesting a private battle for the drivers' title. However, Mercedes has not been as dominant this term compared to the first two seasons of the V6 hybrid era. Its tally of 679 points after 19 races is 24 short of its total at the same point last year. After 19 races in 2015, the team had a record 15 front row lockouts, compared to 12 after the same number of races this year, while in the races, it has scored six one-twos this term compared to 12. How Mercedes Achieves Their Unbelievably Smooth Ride

mercedes-benz-grill

How Active Body Control from Mercedes-Benz Works

The Mercedes-Benz line is famous for the smooth ride that each of their models delivers. This secret has been explained in their most recent models with the Active Body Control system that uses hydraulic actuators to separate the movement of the wheels from the movement of the body of the car so that the impact of bumps on the cabin is absolutely minimal. What is more exciting is the Magic Body Control that uses cameras to prep the hydraulics ahead of time for an even smoother ride. Mercedes is certainly cementing their role as the king of suspension. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnpRNQaOVwY Mercedes-Benz vehicles are notorious for their smooth ride quality. Bumps and ruts just don't bother passengers in Mercedes vehicles like they do in other cars. How does Mercedes do it? Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained is here to tell us. In this video, Jason analyzes how two Mercedes suspension systems work. The base system is Active Body Control, and buyers can go one step further with Magic Body Control. The key to both systems is the hydraulic dampers Mercedes uses. These dampers have hydraulic actuators that react to bumps by making the damper assembly shorter and ruts by making it longer. That allows the tire and wheel to move without the body moving nearly as much. Continue Reading

Mercedes’ “Biggest Step Forwards” In Sedans

mercedes-amg-e63

Mercedes-AMG E63

Soon to hit the LA auto show in November is the Mercedes E63 and E63 S, both of which the Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers described as representing “the biggest step forward we’ve ever taken from one generation to the next.” And looking at the sleek futuristic aesthetics and the horsepower output of the 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine, putting this sedan up to the same number of horses as a few Ferrari supercars, we don’t doubt that claim . On Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz and its AMG performance division unveiled their latest offering — the E63. It is the latest entry in the German super-sedan arms race. When the E63 enters production, it will join a crowded field that includes such industry heavyweights as the BMW M5, Audi RS7, and Porsche Panamera Turbo. The new super fast E-Class model will be offered in two variants: the standard E63 sedan and a "higher" performance E63 S. Both versions of the E63 sedan will be powered a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine. "The new E63 models represent the biggest step forward we've ever taken from one generation to the next," Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers said in a statement. Continue Reading
