Is Rosberg Leaving the Mercedes Racing Team?

Nico-RosbergIf the rumors are true, there’s a big chance that star Formula 1 racer Nico Rosberg will be leaving the Mercedes racing team in 2017 to get behind the wheel with Ferrari. The word seems pretty reliable, though, considering that the place promulgating this potentially very upsetting news is the newspaper Corriere della Sera out of Italy (where, if you didn’t know, F1 racing is insanely popular).

After the crash that happened in the first lap of the 2016 F1 Spanish Grand Prix, these rumors only feel that much more likely to prove to be a hard reality. Furthermore, it was Rosberg’s teammate Lewis Hamilton who claims full responsibility for the unbearably early crash.

And just as athletes in other sports are highly enigmatic whenever discussions of upcoming trades or moves are concerned, when Nico Rosberg was asked whether or not he was going to leave Mercedes, all he said was that he “feel[s] very good at Mercedes, but let’s see what the future holds.”

Things could quickly start to get really sticky for Rosberg should be really be thinking about departing, though. According to Daimer chairman Dieter Zetsche, Rosberg is “under contract for the forthcoming season.” Daimler, of course, being the company that now owns Mercedes-Benz. But, it might not really be all that cut and dry as the Mercedes team’s leader Toto Wolff hinted that there is some negotiating that needs to get done first.

If all this news of Rosberg leaving makes you want to give up following F1 racing, don’t leave too quickly as there is some hope on the horizon. Should Nico Rosberg really give up on Mercedes, another corresponding rumor indicates that he’d be replaced by Fernando Alonso. When speaking with Spain’s El Mundo, Wolff mentioned that Alonso had previously sought a contract with Mercedes at the beginning of the season but Wolff was under obligation at the time to not talk with other drivers due to Lewis Hamilton’s contract renewal. Wolff said that Alonso “is one of the best drivers in history and I like his character,” but still quickly noted that, “Our priority now is Nico.”

As is usually the case in situations like these, fans are in all sorts of an uproar with no real consensus about how they want this all to play out. In any case, seeing as these are all rumors at the moment, we will just have to wait it out to see what is really going on.

Updated C300 an Attractive Joy to Drive

image via Mercedes-Benz

image via Mercedes-Benz

Rocking that world-class German engineering and some incredible Mercedes-Benz suspension, the 2017 C300 is looking to be one of the manufacturer’s most fun cars to get behind the wheel of, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it’s also aesthetically stunning. This could be the year I actually end up replacing my older C300 because the ’17 is so impressive.

Despite its aluminum fenders, hood and trunk, the C300 Coupe still bends the scale at 3,638 pounds in two-wheel drive guise and an even chunkier 3,770 pounds with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

The four-link independent front suspension and five-link rear handle that mass with grace, though. The car didn’t feel heavy in turns, body roll was always under control, and ride quality—in any drive mode and with or without the optional AIRMATIC air suspension with dynamic damping—was very good.

Like seemingly every luxury car these days, you can pick from Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual (customizable) modes, which adjust parameters like throttle response, transmission shift schedule, suspension firmness (on AIRMATIC models), steering sensitivity, air conditioning duty cycle, and start/stop function. Mercedes’ GLB to be Different than First Assumed

image via SB Medien

image via SB Medien

Since Mercedes-Benz first announced that they would be working on a GLB, most people felt as though the company was going to make it an off-road champion. However, they didn’t go that route (it’s not even certain if the GLB will have 4WD) but instead opted for a more modular vehicle, which should make swapping out Mercedes-Benz body parts or other pieces somewhat easier than their other models.

Mercedes-Benz has begun testing the mule of the upcoming GLB, the GLA’s brother. Instead of a baby G-Class, the GLB’s chassis mule is a slightly modified body of the ongoing GLA. Some rumors expected the GLB to be a fully-fledged off-roader, like the G-Class, but smaller.

Right off the bat, we notice an increased ground clearance. Suspension travel is also increased, and the wheel wells are also bigger than those of the GLA. Thanks to this uncamouflaged prototype, which is what the industry calls a “mule,” we can easily spot the differences when compared to a regular GLA.

The upcoming GLB is expected to come to market around two years from now, as an MY2019 vehicle. By then, Mercedes-Benz is set to launch its MFA2 platform, an evolution of the current MFA. Read More

Uber Wants No One to Drive You Around… Technically Speaking

image via Engadget

image via Engadget

While we are on the topic of self-driving cars, it seems that Uber is going to have one of their own on the roads in Pittsburgh that you can be on the lookout for. While autonomous vehicles are actually safer than us human beings, that doesn’t change the fact that I’d rather not have Uber making its way into this industry. All things considered, I think I trust Google and its technologies a whole lot more than anything produced by Uber. If it works out, though, it could eventually drive the cost of Uber so low that it becomes preferable to people actually ever using (or owning) their own cars.

Uber’s foray into the world of self-driving vehicles will become a lot more visible in the coming weeks after the company confirmed its first autonomous car will officially hit the streets of Pittsburgh. The prototype — a hybrid Ford Fusion — will assist the company in collecting mapping data while putting its self-driving capabilities to the test.

Uber’s Advanced Technologies Center (ATC), which is headquartered in the city, has equipped the car with a variety of sensors including radar, laser scanner and high-resolution cameras, but a human rider will be present at all times.

While this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Uber’s prototype — it was spotted cruising the city’s streets by the Pittsburgh Business Times last year — it is the first time the company has publicly shared news of its plans. Read More

Google Looking to Make Self-Driving Cars Sticky

googleWith more autonomous vehicles making their way to the streets than ever before, Google has patented an adhesive that would make hit pedestrians stick to the vehicles rather than bounce off. The thinking here is that pedestrians would avoid secondary injury from hitting the pavement after the initial impact.

While this could potentially be a lifesaving idea in some circumstances, it seems like facing that second injury from the fall might be a better alternative to being stuck to a self-driving car like a bug on fly paper. Cars without drivers may have already proven to a safe addition to our roadways, but if one were to have a person stuck to it and not stop, what’s to stop an autonomous car that didn’t recognize it hit something right away?

Quite a few different companies have autonomous cars in the works, including Audi, Ford, Tesla, BMW, Lexus and, of course, Mercedes-Benz.

Should your self-driving (or manually-operated) Mercedes need a body part from having someone stuck to it, click here for replacement parts.

Google on Thursday had a fresh US patent for a sticky coating that could be applied to self-driving cars so pedestrians stick instead of bouncing off when hit.

The patent describes a layer of adhesive on a car’s hood, front bumper and possibly front side panels sealed with a coating that, when broken, would bare a gluey surface akin to fly paper modified to catch humans.

“Upon impact with a pedestrian, the coating is broken exposing the adhesive layer,” read patent paperwork dated May 17 and listing the applicant as Google. Continue Reading

Price of Oil Moving Up Again

oil-pumpjackOil prices just went higher than they have at any point over the last six months. This increase in price is happening because of an oil shortage across the globe – or at least that’s how Goldman Sachs is reporting it. In any case, the price of oil will, as usual in situations like this, fluctuate with gains and losses for a few days before becoming relatively steady.

Seeing as we don’t know when the next huge oil/gas price increase will be, you might want to do what you can to make sure your vehicle is as efficient as possible. Head over to our Mercedes-Benz fuel page to browse and buy control units, fuel pressure regulators, pumps, tanks and more.

Oil prices hit six-month highs on Monday on worries about global supply outages and as long-time bear Goldman Sachs sounded more positive on the market, although a stockpile build at the U.S. storage hub for crude futures pared gains.

Expectations of resumption in oil exports from a Libyan port, a ramp up in Nigerian crude production by Exxon Mobil Corp and an improved oil-for-loans deal reached by Venezuela with China furthered the tempered the bullish theme in oil.

U.S. crude futures settled up $1.51 at $47.72 a barrel, at their highest since Nov. 3, when they closed at $47.90.

Brent crude futures were trading at $48.99 per barrel, up $1.13, or 2.36 percent. Read More

Temperatures in April the Hottest

With the current trend of an ever-rising average climate temperature, the last seven months have seen record high temperatures each month, and April was no different. Normally (depending on where you live, of course), the month of April brings us mild, enjoyable weather, but it looks like things this trend is going to become the norm.

On that note, you might want to make sure your Mercedes’ climate control system is functioning correctly. If you need anything to keep your A/C running like new, click here for parts.

NASA announced some grim climate news over the weekend.

Last month was the warmest April ever recorded, with soaring temperatures that smashed the previous monthly record by the largest margin in known history.

Sound like something you’ve heard before? It’s probably because you have.

Based on NASA data, April was the seventh month in a row that global temperatures set a new record high. It was also the third consecutive month that the record was broken by the largest margin ever. Continue Reading

Changes Coming Soon to Mercedes-Benz Dealerships

mercedes-benz-dealershipDietmar Exler, the new CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, has announced that he’s planning to bring a number of changes to the brand’s dealerships. These will include both modifications to the way the dealerships look as well as changes to the training programs for dealers.

If you’ve recently bought a Mercedes and are looking to spruce it up, click here to view some great rims.

That’s part of the message Exler will give to retailers this week at Mercedes-Benz’s annual dealer meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. And it means change is likely for some of the training requirements the brand has made for dealerships in recent years. Dealers have been pushing Mercedes to streamline those requirements.

“Maybe we can find ways, by looking together, how can we make it smoother throughout the process,” Exler told Automotive News.

“That’s something we definitely want to focus on with the dealers specifically as it looks like it’s going to be a little trickier going forward in the economy. The 1 million automatic growth year over year on industry sales won’t be there.” Continue Reading

Mercedes-Benz Told to Call it Quits With Airscarf

air-conditioning-ventsAlthough Mercedes owns the term “Airscarf”, which is a feature they offer that blows hot air directly at the necks of the driver and front passenger, they’ve been told by a German court they can no longer use the technology. Apparently, blowing hot air on peoples’ necks was patented back in ’96 by a guy named Ludwig Schatzinger.

So, if Airscarf was something you *really* loved about Mercedes-Benz, you’re going to have to stick to already-produced cars. Speaking of heating and cooling, see what we have in stock for Mercedes climate control.

Mercedes faces a €250,000 (roughly $283,000) fine if it fails to disable the system in its new cars. The company also needs to remove Airscarf from all of its advertising and promotional materials, and it will need to pay Schatzinger an unspecified amount of money.

Introduced in 1998, the Airscarf ventilation system has been fitted to the SLK, the SLC, the SL, the topless version of the SLS, and the convertible variants of the C-, E-, and S-Class models. Luckily for Mercedes, the ruling isn’t retroactive so the Airscarf only needs to be disabled on cars sold after May 9th of this year. Additionally, the court’s decision only applies to cars sold in Germany.

All hope is not lost for sun-worshippers. The patent rights expire on December 25th of this year, so convertible buyers will be able to get the system re-activated after that date. Read More

Mercedes AMG Petronas Team Crashes in Spain

image via BenzInsider

image via BenzInsider

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg of the Mercedes AMG Petronas racing team ran into each other within a few moments after the 2016 F1 Spanish Grand Prix began. This was especially disheartening for the team considering Hamilton and Rosberg had won first and second spots in the starting grid. How’s that for bad luck?

Don’t let yourself lose control of your car… Check out what we have available for Mercedes-Benz steering and suspension.

The unfortunate event happened when Rosberg got past Hamilton on the first bend. Moments later, the reigning F1 champion tried overtaking his teammate from the inside. Rosberg tried blocking the move resulting to Hamilton hitting the grass. However, the Silver Arrow of the Briton spun and struck the car of the German along the way, which took them out of the race.

Niki Lauda, the team’s non-executive chairman, pinned the blame to Hamilton, according to a report. The F1 legend said the current world champion became too aggressive. Despite his initial take on the matter, he pointed out that he still needed to listen to the explanation of each driver.

Toto Wolff, the motorsport director of the group, agreed with Lauda’s observation. But he noted that there is also a fault on Rosberg’s part. Therefore, he will have to wait for the decision of the stewards. Continue Reading

2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK300 Recall Due to Risk of Rolling

image via Mercedes-Benz

image via Mercedes-Benz

It seems there is a peculiar problem hitting a specific group of Mercedes-Benz SLK300s. From this model, those built between June 2 and July 14, 2015, might not have the backup power supply connected properly. In the worst situations, the vehicle will not be able to shift into park nor apply the e-brake, making for a dangerous fiasco, including rolling away when the driver thinks it’s secure.

If you’re having problems with the transmission on your Mercedes-Benz, click here to check out our transmission parts.

“In this situation, without the backup power supply, the only way to keep the vehicle from moving is to press the brake pedal,” the recall documents note. “As soon as the driver attempts to exit the vehicle, the vehicle may roll, increasing the risk of injury.”

The issue appears to be limited to vehicles equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Service technicians will be instructed to correct the switch wiring and perform a software update to restore proper behavior.

It is unclear if the defect has been associated with any accidents or injuries. Read More

Oil Prices to Drop Due to Glut

oil-pumpingOver the last few months, the world’s oil supply has been far greater than was needed, and that has led to some severe price drops which, of course, benefits us the consumers but hurts oil producers. The lower oil prices are expected to run through at least the end of the year. Because of that, it’d be a good time to put some time into your Mercedes, starting with a tune-up.

Paris (AFP) – A global oil glut that has sent prices tumbling is set to “shrink dramatically” later this year, as wildfires have disrupted Canada’s output and demand in India soars, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said Thursday.

Demand for oil worldwide is set to grow at a “solid” rate in 2016, with India the “star performer” after making up nearly 30 percent of the global increase in demand in the first quarter of the year, the IEA said.

“This provides further support for the argument that India is taking over from the China as the main growth market for oil,” the 29-nation IEA said in its closely watched monthly report. Read More

Nissan Bought a Third of Mitsubishi

mitsubishi-bumperIn a move that is likely due to the recent mileage scandal that Mitsubishi has been dealing with, the auto manufacturer sold 34 percent of the company to Nissan Motor Co. There have not been any announcements yet as to how Mitsubishi’s lineup will change, but they were quick to inform the public that the two brands will remain separate as far as dealerships and their identities are concerned.

Nissan Motor Co. is taking a 34 percent stake in scandal-ridden Mitsubishi Motors Corp. in what Nissan Chief Carlos Ghosn said was “a win-win” deal that aims to repeat the success of his Nissan-Renault alliance.

Ghosn appeared with Mitsubishi Motors Chairman Osamu Masuko in a hastily called joint conference Thursday in Yokohama, where Nissan is headquartered. Ghosn said Nissan will invest 237 billion yen ($2.2 billion) to become the top investor in Mitsubishi Motors.

Mitsubishi group companies — Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, trading company Mitsubishi Corp. and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ — will continue to hold stakes in the automaker, but they have agreed to support the alliance with Nissan, both sides said. Continue Reading

New Hybrid Semi an Efficient Alternative

image via Nikola Motor Company

image via Nikola Motor Company

With a 1,200 mile range between gas stops, it looks like a new hybrid semi manufacturer, Nikola Motor Company, is carving a name for itself in the energy-efficient vehicles market with some very impressive engineering behind it.The company is named after the same inventor that the car manufacturer Tesla was named for (Nikola Tesla) and should have a lot of interesting engine and electrical parts.

Tesla is getting into trucking. At least his first name is.

The Nikola Motor Company, a Utah-based startup, has unveiled a compressed natural gas-electric hybrid semi aimed at disrupting the long-haul trucking industry the way the Tesla Model S did the car business.

The company is run by Trevor Milton, a former executive at dHybrid Systems, which developed a CNG system for tractor-trailers that’s now owned by Worthington Industries. Along with Faraday Future, Nikola is the latest automotive outfit named after an electrical pioneer to seemingly appear from the ether. Continue Reading

Winterizing Your Mercedes with Accessories

snowy-streetAlthough the article below is targeted at India, the discussion about the best car accessories for winter is still on target regarding us here in the states. Even the locations discussed correspond to the U.S. when the piece brings up the Southwest, North and East portions of the country. In any  case,  you should consider grabbing some car accessories now to get your vehicle ready for winter, including parts like mud flaps and floor mats.

For most motorists, the cold months are nothing more than a blimp on the temperature scale. This is particularly true for those in the south-western part of the country. Go up north and across the east however, and you begin to realize just what winter is. Cars in India that live there often end up needing something extra to help them tide over the biting cold and snow.

This is why, the list of best car accessories for winters below, might be handy for those who might opt to hit the roads when the temperature starts to plunge.

Most cars in India only end up using the air-conditioning function of their HVAC units. As a result, the heater goes unused and runs the risk of breaking down when the temperature slider is moved to the right. The best thing to do is give the heater a thorough service typically before the cold sets in, so that it is functioning at its optimum best when you need it the most. Read More

Clifton, NJ, Cop Under Investigation After Brake Checking a Driver

An officer in Clifton, NJ, is in hot water after dashcam footage caught him brake checking the driver behind him. In the video, shared below, you can see the cop braking quick in the middle of the street with nothing in front of him. As you can imagine, this dangerous practice hasn’t gone over lightly with the city’s residents, which has resulted in an investigation by the police department’s Internal Affairs.

Don’t let your brakes fail in a time like this, check out our Mercedes brakes.

A dashcam recording of a city police officer braking suddenly in the middle of the roadway, and then issuing multiple tickets to the driver behind him has caused an uproar among some residents and triggered an internal affairs probe of the officer involved.

The footage, taken by the driver’s dashcam, was posted last week to YouTube by a Clifton resident who identified himself only as Omar B. It shows the officer slamming on his brakes in front of the motorist as he drives north up Van Houten Avenue.

There is nothing in front of the officer when he brakes suddenly, and the officer admits in the recording that he braked only because he felt the motorist behind him was following too closely. As a result, the driver is forced to brake quickly in the middle of the road. Continue Reading

Mercedes-Benz and Tesla Motors Ending Electric Car Parts Deals

Although Tesla is the king -arguably- when it comes to all things electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is finally going to stop getting their electric drivetrains and battery packs from the electric-centric auto builder. From here on out, Mercedes will be building their own parts in a new factory that makes their electric car production far more self-sufficient.

After seven years, Mercedes-Benz and Tesla Motors are parting ways. The German automaker will go at it alone in developing the next generation B-Class Electric Drive, its fully electric $42,000 compact five-door hatchback.

“We have had an excellent project with Tesla and have worked very well with them,” Harald Kroeger, head of electric-drive development at Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler AG, told the German magazine Wirtshafts Woche in an article published over the weekend.

But the company has invested 500 million euros ($550.5 million) in a battery and drivetrain plant and can now supply itself with the necessary components, Kroeger added. Read More

Replica Mercedes Rims on Amazon Leads to Lawsuit

Amazon has been supporting the sale of replica Mercedes-Benz rims and Daimler isn’t having any of that. The auto manufacturer is suing Amazon for copyright infringement, which may actually end up leading to a bigger issue that determines if Amazon should be held responsible for infringements made by third-party sellers.

For legit rims, click here.

Daimler AG is suing Amazon for patent and trademark infringement, alleging that the e-commerce giant illegally sold and distributed replica Mercedes-Benz wheels from a third-party manufacturer that “blatantly copy” the automotive giant’s protected designs.

The lawsuit, filed this week in U.S. District Court in Seattle, could serve as a new test of Amazon’s liability for counterfeit goods sold on its site — an issue with wide-ranging financial and legal implications for the company.

Amazon last year won a similar case against pillowcase maker Milo & Gabby, although the ruling is currently under appeal, and the trial court judge said legislators should revisit the law on which the decision was based. Continue Reading

He’s been charged with a number of crimes, too, including driving on a suspended license, service theft and missing a front license plate.

The impounded car might be good news for you, though, as it might go up for auction cheap somewhat soon. If so, you might want to fix it up and maybe get some new rims for it. If so, click here to check out our rims selection.

Authorities say a New Jersey man who owes $12,000 in unpaid EZ Pass tolls has had his black Mercedes Benz impounded and is facing charges.

After a (second) crash during the famous NASCAR Talladega race during his 50th lap, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s race came to an abrupt end. He was looking to achieve his seventh win, but instead will just need to put some work into his car, especially when it comes to fixing the car’s body.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s quest for a seventh win at Talladega ended on Lap 50 of Sunday’s Geico 500 after a three-car crash.

Much like the accident that cost him in the Daytona 500, Earnhardt’s car got loose and turned sideways into teammate Kasey Kahne’s car. Junior’s car jad heavy front-left end damage after hitting Matt DiBenedetto’s car. Damage also was caused to another Earnhardt teammates, Chase Elliott.

“I think trying to put the nose between the No. 19 (Carl Edwards) and the No. 14 (Tony Stewart) there is a lot of air coming off both those cars and just pinned the nose,” Earnhardt told Fox Sports after the crash. “We were real tight, the splitter was on the ground real bad the whole first run and we took some rounds out of the back and that really made the car too loose off of the corner. Same thing we did at Daytona.” Continue Reading
